How the Odoo MCP Server module works: technical deep dive and installation
DAADit Group, Nick

DAADit's MCP server provides a direct connection between Odoo and AI tools such as Claude, ChatGPT or Cursor. No more manual exports, no more copying between screens: your AI assistant reads and edits data directly in your Odoo environment. But how exactly does that work, and how do you set it up? In this blog we explain what the server does, how you create the connection and what to look out for.

What is the MCP server and why is it useful?

MCP (Model Context Protocol) is an open standard that gives AI tools secure, structured access to external systems, such as your Odoo environment. With DAADit's MCP server you can, for example:

  • Retrieve data from Odoo directly via your AI assistant, without manual exports.
  • Carry out actions in Odoo, such as creating a quotation or updating a customer record, directly from your chat.
  • Use real-time information from Odoo in your conversations, without delays or manual intermediate steps.

The server acts as a secure intermediary layer: your AI tool talks to the MCP server, and that server in turn communicates with your Odoo instance via the standard Odoo API. In practice, this means that a question like "which invoices are still outstanding for customer Jansen?" immediately returns an up-to-date answer from your own records.

Connecting to the MCP server

DAADit's MCP server is an online, hosted service. You don't need to install anything in Odoo and no extra software runs on your server. You set up the connection in four steps:

  1. Log in to the portal: go to daadit.group/my/mcp and log in with your customer account.
  2. Create the connection: enter the URL of your Odoo environment and authorise access. DAADit's MCP server is now connected to your Odoo.
  3. Receive the endpoint: once connected, you receive a unique MCP endpoint URL. You need this for your AI tool.
  4. Configure in your AI tool: add the endpoint URL as an MCP server in your AI tool, for example in Claude, ChatGPT or Cursor.

Most customers have the connection working within fifteen minutes, including the first test question.

Technical deep dive: how the communication works

Once the connection is in place, every request goes through four steps:

  • Request from the AI tool: your AI tool sends a request to the MCP server, for example: "Fetch the last 10 sales from Odoo."
  • Translation by the MCP server: the MCP server translates this request into the correct Odoo API call, for example a search_read on the sale.order model.
  • Execution in Odoo: Odoo carries out the action and sends the results back to the MCP server.
  • Response to the AI tool: the MCP server formats the Odoo data and sends it back to your AI tool, which presents it to you.

This entire process is secure: you decide which data and actions are available to the MCP server. The AI tool never gets direct access to your database.

Security and permissions

Security comes first. DAADit ensures that:

  • All traffic between your AI tool, the MCP server and Odoo is encrypted.
  • You set the permissions for the MCP server in Odoo yourself, via the standard Odoo groups and access rights.
  • The MCP server only has access to the data and actions you have explicitly approved.

You can disconnect the connection at any time via the DAADit portal. Access is then revoked immediately.

Practical tip to get started

Start small: create a separate user in Odoo for the MCP connection with read-only access to a single module, for example Sales. That way you experience the added value without risk, and only extend the permissions once you are confident.
