New warehouse? New racking? Then you need barcode labels for every location. Odoo can generate them directly, but there are a few settings you need to know to avoid a laser-printer mishap. Below is the step-by-step plan as we set it up for customers — from a wholesaler with three racks to a distribution centre with thousands of locations.
1. Barcode Scanner app activeren
Go to Inventory → Settings and tick Barcode Scanner. This activates barcode functionality throughout the Inventory module. Without this setting, you simply won't see the print options appear — the most frequently asked "where is that button?" question on our helpdesk.
2. Creating locations with the right hierarchy
Under Inventory → Configuration → Locations you create your warehouse layout. Work hierarchically: Warehouse → Zone → Rack → Shelf → Location. Each location is automatically assigned a unique barcode. Logical naming pays for itself twice over later:
- WH/A/01/03 = magazijn, zone A, stelling 1, plank 3 — iedereen snapt het meteen.
- Keep names short: a 5 cm label has no room for a novel.
- Number shelves from bottom to top, so the order matches when walking pick routes.
3. Barcodes in bulk afdrukken
Select multiple locations in the list view and click Action → Print → Barcode Labels. Odoo generates a single PDF with all the labels, on A4 or on a special label format. So for a hundred locations you're done just as quickly as for one.
Note: printer settings
By default, the PDF is sent to your regular printer. For label printers (such as Zebra or Brother), set up an IoT Box or Direct Print via Inventory → Configuration → IoT. There you specify, per document type, which printer Odoo should use. That way location labels roll out of the Zebra next to the packing table, while delivery slips simply go to the office printer.
Best practice: layout aanpassen
The standard Odoo label layout isn't always ideal. You can adjust the template via Studio, or we can do it for you: a larger barcode, extra fields (rack and shelf text in legible letters), or a QR-code variant that can also be scanned with a phone camera. Before sticking on 500 labels, always test one sample label with your scanner from two metres away.
