A promotion like WELCOME10 or free shipping over €50: every online store wants to run one at some point, preferably today. The good news: in Odoo you do not need a developer for it, and certainly no price change on every individual product. With the discounts and loyalty module you put a promotion together in fifteen minutes.
How to create a discount code
- Make sure the Discounts & Loyalty (Coupons & Loyalty) app is installed.
- Go to Website → eCommerce → Discounts & Loyalty and create a new programme of the type Discount Code.
- Set the condition, for example a minimum spend of €50 or only products from a particular category.
- Choose the effect: a percentage (20% off), a fixed amount or free shipping.
- Generate one fixed code (WELCOME10) or a batch of unique codes, for example for a mailing.
The customer enters the code at checkout; Odoo checks the conditions automatically and applies the discount to the basket straight away.
One code or a batch?
- One fixed code: easy to communicate on social media or a trade-show banner. Downside: anyone can pass it on.
- Unique codes per customer: ideal for a newsletter or as an apology discount after a complaint. Each code works only once, so passing it on is pointless.
Protect your margin
Give every code an end date and a maximum number of uses per customer. Without those limits, your December promotion code will resurface years later via screenshots in Facebook groups — and you will be giving away discounts on orders that would otherwise have been placed at full price. A home furnishings store we supported discovered this way that a 'forgotten' code from two years earlier was still being used every month.
Finally
Practical tip: test every new code yourself first with a trial order, including the scenario in which the condition is not met — then you know for sure the message shown to the customer is right. Would you like to get more out of your Odoo online store? Contact DAADit Group, we are happy to help.
