Your loyal A-customers get 30 days' credit, new customers pay in advance and that one wholesaler has negotiated 14 days. Anyone who has to set that manually on every invoice will sooner or later make a mistake — and then it is precisely that new customer who accidentally gets 30 days to pay. In Odoo you record the payment terms once on the customer, and from then on it simply goes right.

Go to Accounting → Configuration → Payment Terms and create the profiles you actually use in practice. A few common examples:
- 30 days net — the classic for regular business customers.
- Immediate — payment on invoicing, for new or private customers.
- 14 days net — for customers with a shorter agreement.
- 50% now, 50% on delivery — a split term, useful for projects or custom work. Odoo then automatically splits the due dates on the invoice.
Linking it to the customer
Open the customer record and, on the Sales & Purchase tab, fill in the Payment Terms field. From that moment on, Odoo automatically applies these terms to every new quotation and invoice for that customer. The due date is calculated correctly straight away, so your aged receivables report and automatic reminders are correct too. Good to know: the same tab also has payment terms for the purchase side, for what you have agreed with your suppliers.
Credit limits for high-risk customers
Payment terms say when payment is due; a credit limit says how much may be outstanding. In Accounting → Configuration → Settings, enable the Credit Limit option and set an amount for each high-risk customer. If a salesperson then creates an order while the customer is already over their limit, Odoo shows a warning straight away. That stops the outstanding balance of a shaky customer from creeping up unnoticed from €2,000 to €15,000.
Finally
Practical tip: once a quarter, go through the list view of your customers grouped by payment terms. Customers without terms stand out immediately — and those are exactly the invoices that lead to disputes. Would you like to tighten up your debtor policy in Odoo? Contact DAADit Group.
