Everyone agrees that new leads deserve a few warm-up emails before sales calls. And yet it does not happen: the first week goes well, then day-to-day business takes over. With Marketing Automation in Odoo you build that series once, and then it runs by itself — even during your marketer's holiday week.
Setting up the campaign
Marketing Automation is an Enterprise app; install it via Apps. Then create a campaign via Marketing Automation ▸ Campaigns ▸ New. Two choices determine who enters:
- Target: the model the campaign runs on, usually Lead/Opportunity (it can also run on contacts).
- Filter: the condition for entry, for example 'Tag = Trade show leads' or 'Source = Website'. Every new lead that matches the filter automatically becomes a participant.
Building the flow visually
Next, you stack activities one below the other. A proven starter flow for, say, a machinery dealer following up trade-show leads:
- Immediately: a welcome email with the promised brochure.
- Wait 3 days, then a second email with a customer case.
- Branch on the second email: opened? Then an activity for the salesperson ('call within 2 days'). Not opened? Then after 4 days a short reminder email with a different subject line.
Test first with the Launch a Test button on your own address, then set the campaign to Start. From that moment on, the engine continuously checks who enters and leaves.
Why simple wins
The temptation is to build ten emails and five branches straight away. Don't: such flows become maintenance nightmares that nobody dares to change any more. Three emails and one condition per campaign is fine; better three clear campaigns side by side than one that cannot be untangled.
Finally: measure and improve
Practical tip: after a month, look at the open and click rates per email in the campaign and replace only the weakest email — that way you improve step by step without overhauling the whole flow.
