Setting Up Dropshipping in Odoo
DAADit Group, Nick

In short: you enable dropshipping in Odoo via Purchase → Configuration → Settings → Dropshipping. Then set the route on the product to Dropship and fill in the supplier. For every sales order, Odoo automatically creates a purchase order with your customer's delivery address. Setup takes around 15 minutes.

You want to sell products without having them on the shelf yourself: the supplier ships directly to your end customer. That saves warehouse space, stock risk and lugging boxes around. In Odoo this is called dropshipping, and it can be set up in a quarter of an hour — provided you know a few pitfalls.

Dropshipping activeren

The basic setup consists of three steps:

  1. In Purchase → Configuration → Settings, enable the Dropshipping option.
  2. Open the product and, on the Purchase tab, set the route to Dropship. Also fill in the supplier and the purchase price on the vendor list.
  3. Done. As soon as a sales order comes in, Odoo automatically generates a draft purchase order to the supplier — with your customer's delivery address on it.

Once you confirm that purchase order, Odoo creates a dropship delivery that you tick off as soon as the supplier has shipped. The margin is immediately visible on the sales order.

Lead times: don't promise dates you can't keep

The biggest complaint about dropshipping is not the logistics but the communication. If your supplier needs five working days and your webshop promises 'delivered tomorrow', you have a problem. So set the supplier's lead time on the product's vendor list; Odoo factors it into the promised delivery date on the sales order. If needed, add a safety margin (security lead time) for customers via Inventory → Configuration → Settings.

Reporting per channel

Use a separate dropship operation type or location for your reporting. That way you see margin and volume per channel at a glance: what do you sell from your own stock, and what goes via the supplier? A trading company that, for example, delivers lamps from its own warehouse but has furniture dropshipped can then decide per product group which channel is best.

Veelgestelde vragen

Does Odoo create the purchase order automatically with dropshipping?

Yes. As soon as a sales order is confirmed for a product with the Dropship route, Odoo automatically creates a draft purchase order to the linked supplier, including the end customer's delivery address.

Can I combine dropshipping with my own stock?

Yes, per product. Fast movers you keep in your own stock with a reordering rule for fast delivery; slow movers you put on the dropship route. You can also deviate per warehouse or order line.

Will my customer see that the delivery comes via a supplier?

That is up to you. The delivery note and shipping communication come from your Odoo; many suppliers will ship neutrally or under your label on request (blind dropshipping). Agree this with your supplier.

Finally

Practical tip: combine dropshipping with a reordering rule for your fast movers. Products that sell frequently you still keep in your own stock for faster delivery; the slow movers stay on dropship. That gives you the best of both worlds. Still working with Exact or a standalone webshop? Then also take a look at our ERP comparison. Need help setting up your dropship flow in Odoo?
