A main warehouse in Utrecht, a shop in Amersfoort and external storage at a logistics partner: many growing companies work with multiple physical locations. As long as everything sits in one Excel file or one virtual stock, nobody knows exactly what is where any more. Odoo can manage all those locations in a single database, with accurate stock levels per warehouse.

Activate the Multi-warehouses option (storage locations) in Inventory → Configuration → Settings. Then, under Configuration → Warehouses, create a warehouse for each physical location with its own short code: WH1 for the main warehouse, SHOP for the shop, EXT for the external storage. That code appears in all references (WH1/OUT/00042), so you can see at a glance where a delivery is coming from.
On the sales order you choose per order which warehouse delivers; per sales team or website you can set a default warehouse. That way your webshop always delivers from WH1, for example, while the shop sells from its own stock.
Moving stock between locations
For internal moves you use Transfers (internal transfers). If you want to do that neatly with a shipping and a receiving step — handy when the lorry takes a day — activate the 'Resupply from' route per warehouse: Odoo then automatically creates an outgoing delivery at one warehouse and a receipt at the other. The stock sits in a transit location while on the way, so nothing gets 'lost' in the administration.
Reordering rules per warehouse
The most important lesson from practice: set reordering rules (min/max) per warehouse. One central rule across all warehouses is almost never right — the shop is fine with two units, the main warehouse wants fifty. Per warehouse you also decide whether replenishment runs via purchasing or via a transfer from the main warehouse.
- Main warehouse: replenish via purchase orders with the supplier.
- Shop: replenish via internal transfer from the main warehouse.
- External storage: manual replenishment only, for seasonal stock for example.
Finally
Practical tip: in the stock report (Inventory → Reporting → Stock), group by 'Warehouse'. That one overview prevents most surprises at stocktaking. Want to talk through the best warehouse structure for your situation? Contact DAADit Group.
